just great
I don't know whom to start with, the writer or the illustator. The book is very funny and to top it the drawings add humor to it. My 8 and a half years old boy laughed and loved it. Because we liked it so, we bought winnie can fly which is just as great.
Ran to buy it or just klick it.

You and your children will love Winnie and Wilbur
I found this book at the library. My 4 and 6 year old love it so much they asked for their own copy to have for always. Winnie's whole house is black and so is her cat Wilbur. This presents a problem when Winnie trips over Wilbur several times. She decides the solution is to magically turn him multi-colored but Wilbur is so unhappy Winnie changes him back and comes up with a much better solution. Any child will love this endearing story. Winnie the Witch is a great read anytime of the year.

Will capture kids imaginations
A wonderful brilliantly illustrated book. It's impact has been so large in the UK, that children now draw their witches with socks the same colour as Winnie's.

Not just for Halloween.

Wisdom of Dying: Practices for Living
Published in Hardcover by Element Books Ltd. (July, 1999)
Authors: N. Michael Murphy and Thomas Moore
Average review score:

Very thought provoking
A thought provoking book that allows one to confront the face of death and accept it. Most people believe themselves to be immortal until the inevitable loss of a loved one happens. This book changes that once scary part of our reality cycle into something that helps us live a more mindful life. The exercise of seeing yourself go through your last days is alone worth the price of this book. I'm young so it's hard for me to buy into all that "love everybody" message but I suspect that's a fault of mine not the authors. A very well written book that is a must read for everyone.

Moving and Touches the Heart
Michael Murphy reminds us that underneath our personality, roles in life, and even the experience of death is eternal life. Here, we are transcended from self-centered awareness into life-centered awareness. In this dimension of our being, our soul is revealed. The connections made on the level of soul in our relationships create invisible bonds forever linking us as children of the Comos. Thanks Michael Murphy for your insight into the sacred human path to love. -- Samuel Oliver, author of, WHAT THE DYING TEACH US: LESSONS ON LIVING.

the best book on the subject in years
It was very good to read this book filled with helpfull ideas and fresh approaches to ancient themes. As a human being I recognized many of the situations that were described and as a doctor I felt proud that it was one of us who wrote this book.

The Wise Men: Six Friends And The World They Made (Part I)
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape, Inc. (14 March, 1996)
Author: W./Thomas, E. Isaacson
Average review score:

The Old Boys
The term 'Best and Brightest' is usually used, somewhat sarcastically, to refer to the policy makers in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, those initially involved with the Vietnam War. However, these policy makers, men like Clark Clifford and Robert McNamara, were merely following in the footsteps of a tradition established in the wake of World War II. This book traces the origin of what could be called the original 'Best and Brightest', those men who formulated American foreign policy during the beginning of the Cold War, and on into the Vietnam War. The Wise Men focuses in particular on six of these men: Averell Harriman, Dean Acheson, Robert Lovett, Charles Bohlen, John Jay McCloy, and George Kennan. While it is a biography of men, it skips through the early parts of their lives, for it is mostly a biography of the State Department during World War II and the Cold War, and the role these six men had in its birth and maturation. It is also a biography of the American Establishment, which all of these men, educated at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, came to typify. It is a great book, and worth while to any with an interest in America since World War II.

Great book about our biggest policy makers
This is about six people that were some of the biggest policy makers in U.S. foreign policy from the 1930's through the 1970's. I read a book about one of the six, John McCloy, a few years ago. Besides McCloy, the book visits Averell Harriman, Secretary of State Dean Acheson, George Kenan, Secretary of Defense Robert Lovett, and Ambassador to the Soviet Union Charles Bohlen.

Exhaustive (exhausting), and fascinating
This book is fantastically interesting. The detail and the descriptions of personalities involved make the subject matter more than palatable, even to the less scholarly among us. The book is, however, very, very long and would have perhaps been better broken up into several volumes. I would characterize it as very well written, exhaustively researched, slightly fawning and uncritical at times, and, in general, well worth lugging around.

Women's Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (December, 1990)
Author: Thomas Sankara
Average review score:

"...a gem of a pamphlet..."
Among the many useful titles on women's liberation published by Pathfinder Press sits a gem of a pamphlet titled Women's Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle. It contains the full text of a speech given by Thomas Sankara, the revolutionary leader of the West African country Burkina Faso (formally Upper Volta) until his assassination in 1987.

Sankara gives his speech to thousands of Burkinabe women gathered to commemorate International Women's Day on March 8, 1987. His speech is bereft of the dogma and the rhetoric normally seen in capitalist politicians and is remarkably direct but sincere.

Sankara devotes a good portion of the speech detailing the specific challenges confronting African women in pursuit of their liberation on the continent. Based on a Marxist understanding of the development of class society he points to this fact as the origin of women's oppression.

Sankara puts the fight of Burkinabe women as part of the struggle for women's liberation world wide. A special strength of the speech is when Sankara stresses how the emancipation of women goes hand in hand with "the struggle for the rehabilitation of our continent".

For supporters of women's rights this pamphlet is a must read.

Africa Women Revolution all together and real
Sankara's speech isn't abstract rhethoric--what we used to call rapology int he days of the civil rights movement. It is practical leadership by a real revolutionist battling reaction, imperialism, and the weight of history, in a battle that he would give his life to. Listen to these words for what they say about the realities of the need to liberate women not just in Africa but throughout the World!

the emancipation of women and the emancipation of Africa
These two issues strike at the heart of many struggles today. Sankara was the leader of a 1983 anti-imperialist revolution in the west African nation of Burkina Faso (known as Upper Volta in colonial times). He is unsparing in his condemnation of those who assert that traditional African values justify the isolation and oppression of women.

He calls on women to rise against the sexism of tribal, neo-colonial and capitalist eras that prevent their equal participation in society. He explains to male Burkinabe workers and peasants the necessity of this in order to fight for the liberation of their nation from colonialism and capitalism.

Wonderful Flying Machines: A History of U.S. Coast Guard Helicopters
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (November, 1996)
Authors: Barrett Thomas Beard and Howard B. Thorsen
Average review score:

PTom's a Ptop Drawer Ptero!
Tom is a gem. He's one of the few people who has written of Coast Guard Aviation who knows that of which he speaks, having been there and done it. This is not to disparage the various historians and popular authors such as Sebastian Junger who have tried to get a handle on what it is we do, but we Pterodactyls are a tight-lipped bunch to outsiders. But Tom is one of us, and we're glad he blabbed. He has done a meticulous study of Frank Erickson and the evolution of the search & rescue helicopter and the mundane, but necessary innovations such as the rescue hoist. Without the machinations that Frank went through, rescue at sea would be a very different business today. Many people do not understand that the United States Coast Guard INVENTED hoisting people from the water. Frank was brilliant, uncredited, and unknown, outside of CG Aviation. He was disdained by the seaplane community in the CG during his lifetime. The passage of time has proven Frank right. In his book, Tom grasped and articulated the struggle that Frank went through proving his theories and nicely packaged Igor Sikorsky's vision for the helicopter as a tool for humanitarian service. Even my non-flying friends enjoyed the book...which I recommend when they ask what the heck it is that I do for a living.

Very interesting and inlighening about Coast Guard aviation
This book kept me interested thru out. The story of LT Frank Erickson is one of persistance and will. I felt the books ending is what really made it all come together "The Sum of All dreams". The story of Michael Odom is a book within itself. This autor really did his home work and left me understanding the importance of helicopters and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Strong-willed officers advance the cause of whirly birds.
U. S. Coast Guard aviator, Lt. Frank Erickson, on December 7, 1941, saw sailors struggling in the waters of Pearl Harbor. He remembered an article about a small helicopter developed by Igor Sikorsky. Erickson felt here was the ideal rescue tool for the U.S. Coast Guard aviators to help those in distress. From this time forward Erickson worked toward this goal. In the end, it cost him his career. Erickson ran head-long into those officers who felt seaplanes were the ideal rescue device. The book traces the struggle to have the helicopter accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard. One of the interesting currents running through the book is that of strong-willed officers fighting for a cause and willing to sacrifice their careers to advance it. This is one of those rare histories that show the contributions the U.S. Coast Guard has made to naval history. The book is recommended to anyone interested in military and naval history, either in or out of aviation.

Grew with my child
I bought this book when my son was 2 months old, now he's 2 years old and he STILL loves it. I love the illustrations of the baby. This is a time when my son can appreciate what the words mean and not just how well they sound together. I'm going to find other books from this group to add to his collection. I'm looking now to purchase one for a friend who's having her first child.

Our Newborn - Our Perfect Baby
This little book is our favorite. Our son is 3 months old now and we have been reading this book to him since he was just one week old. He loves to focus on the baby's face and wiggles all over. It's wonderful to have multi-cultural books to offer children. Our baby looks like the baby in the book :) We can't wait to collect the others in this series!

BABY LOVES TO SEE IT
This book is a delight! My child loves to look at the bright illustrations of other baby faces, and loves it when I get to the part that says "You are my perfect baby!" The message of this books is unconditional, affecionate love. Great text! He quiets down whenever I open the pages!

127 Authentic Art Deco Patterns in Full Color (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1994)
Authors: Aug. H. Thomas and G. Darcy
Average review score:

Beautiful And Inspiring
This is an excellent selection of colorful graphic patterns in the deco genre, and should be a useful and inspiring resource to designers, students, and afficianados.

127 Authentic Art Deco Designs
This book represents early Art Deco Designs, perhaps even late Art Nouveau Designs. The strikingly remarkable feature is the color combinations, which show the early flavor of the period. These designs were taken from two portfolios of 1920's artists.

There is a full range of figures from antalope and mountian lion to flowers and people. Some of which are highly intricate and ornate, while others verge on the primative. As a source book for a decorative artist (me), it gives subject and theme for any period compositions which can be mounted.

The art is highly styled and ornate, giving a fresh look to the Art Deco Period.
